Thank you ANB for making our Kiwi team so welcome at the Asia Pacific Champs!! We all enjoyed the professional, yet friendly, approach of this fantastic federation - right from the word go :-)

At registration, as we gathered for our massive team photo, Robert spoke to the team and welcomed us all to this amazing event. The team were buzzing and really looking forward to the day ahead. Murray, the team really appreciated the time you took to chat with each of them (they kept calling you 'the guy with the shoulders!)

As usual, with any competition, we had a day full of wonderful surprises, disappointments, successes, laughs, tears and lots of lessons learnt. The team all knew that this would be a tough competition up against our cousy's from across the ditch and the aussie competitors sure presented their best!

I know that every one of our 35 kiwis out of 202 competitors got up on stage and gave it their all! Every one of them needs to feel so proud of themselves and know that they did their very best on the day - this is all you can ever ask of yourself. Regardless of their placing they were all winners in my mind.

We walked away with seeing 5 of our athletes, Christine, Karen, Gladys, Wayne and Rede, compete in the overall line-ups - 4 more than last year - and we will aim toward another successful year in 2011.

Steve and Antonietta, thankyou for providing such an amazing show for our team - for most of them this was their first experience of a competition outside of NZ - and for a few of them it was their very first competition ever! And thankyou to the Australian athletes who made our athletes feel so welcome on your home soil - this really goes a long way and one day I would love to be doing the same for you here in NZ.

My goal now is to have the first ANB NZ show :-) With the support of the ANB, I have been working toward making this eventuate for well over a year now, and the feeling within the NZ natural athletes is very positive and we are very excited to welcome this drug-tested federation here.

A huge thankyou to our sponsor - Martin Bolton from Balance! Our team uniforms looked spectacular and the product you sent the team was very much appreciated.

Also a massive thank you to Lisa from GoFigure who has been a constant support to the team from the beginning. Thankyou Lisa for keeping our family and friends up-to-date with the competition proceedings as the day progressed via your web-site - I know it was very much appreciated by those back home.

And thank you to our supporters that travelled with the team and also those aussie supporters (but kiwis at heart) that came to see their family/friends compete.

Lastly, thank you to the wonderful team of natural athletes who gave it their very best - without you there would be no show :-) I was so proud of you all x

Tory Holmes & Mark Batty

Hi I'm Tory

I got into weight training as a diversion, my partner is a professional down hill mountain biker so i needed something far removed from two wheels and the gym seemed like the right place. Also after 5 shoulder operations the thought of regaining some strength wasn't a silly one. I have always been involved in sports, especially rowing where I represented NZ at the under 18 world champs. However I have only been weight training for just over a year. I had my first competition at the NZFBB South Island champs last September and got hooked, this will be my third competition so to get to compete overseas is a fantastic opportunity.

When I'm not in the gym I'm usually pretty busy with my two dogs, or working as an oncology nurse. I cant wait to get to Aussie compete and soak up some sun. There isn't too much in Dunedin!

Hi, my name is Mark Batty. I am 45 years old and live in North Canterbury. I am married with 3 teenage daughters living at home. Being the only male in house full of women is interesting. Even our 2 dogs (boxers) are females !

I love anything with an engine that goes fast.

I have always enjoyed keeping fit and love lifting weights. I am 6ft 5 and to be honest bodybuilding is not the easiest sport for someone of my height and naturally lean build. At each competition, if I can improve slightly on the previous one, then I’m happy !

My wife Carol is also in to bodybuilding but has decided not to compete this time round . Instead she’ll be concentrating on enjoying the Gold Coast weather (and food)

This will be my 6th bodybuilding competition

Donelle Petelo

If you asked me 2 years ago if I would ever train in a gym, lift weights, drink protein shakes and put on a sparkly bikini in front of hundreds of people, I would of laughed and told you to pour me another bourbon and coke! Two years down the track, four comps later and the fifth around the corner, I think to myself, you have got to be kidding me! Who would of thought!

Hi my name is Donelle Petelo and I am a happy mother of three beautiful but very demanding kids. After the birth of my two year son Cruz, he left me a present on my hips, an additional 30kgs……leaving me weighing in at 92kgs.Thanks buddy. I decided to lose it all with the amazing help of my nutritionist ALISON RAINBOW and a loss of 37kg’s later I competed in my first ever competition: The Auckland Champs in 2008. From there, I was well and truly hooked.

This amazing opportunity I have been offered to compete in Australia fills me with excitement and anticipation. I admire the federation’s professionalism and organization and I can’t wait to compete against the high level of competitors that will be attending.

I must admit that the most enjoyable part of this sport is the opportunity I get to push my body to its limits and beyond. It is amazing to see what your body can achieve when the mind perceives! To top this of is to also know that myself and all the other competitors are doing this naturally! Now that is admirable!

I would like to say a huge thanks to BALANCE Sports Nutrition for the amazing tasting supplements that I would have died without and to Ali G for her organization and support!

GO NEW ZEALAND!!!!!! JUST BRING IT!!!!!

Jason and Vanessa Bartley

Well where to start? If in doubt, start at the beginning I s’pose, and to do that, flash back almost 12 months to the day when my wife Vanessa decided to give up smoking. She also decided she did not want to go the way of many ‘giver-uppers’ and gain weight!

A friend of ours at our local gym in Whangamata had recently competed in a contest and suggested Vanessa do the same. Me, being the faithful husband I am, tagged along for the ride!

So that is how our foray into bodybuilding started.

We did not start from scratch though. Vanessa had been instructing pump for 18 months previous to starting the serious weight training. Vanessa has always been active, as most good keen Kiwi girls are, playing touch, netball, squash, and being a regular walker / runner up Mount Maunganui. Currently she relaxes riding her horse Gypsy when not throwing tin around at the gym!

I had more of a head start in body building though, with 20 years of lifting weights under my belt while training through my rugby days. Although back then the training was for strength and functionality, as opposed to ‘looking pretty’ on stage painted up to look like a mahogany Oscars statuette! I always did enjoy the weights side of training more than running though, should have started this years ago.

We have now competed in two competitions, and enjoyed them both. First at the Wellington NABBA event in 2009, when we were a couple of wide eyed novices, and then at the NABBA nationals later in the year. This year we’ll be racking up another four, including the ANB event, and hopefully, all going well, the NABBA Nationals at the end of the year.

My wife is saying to not make this too long, so I’ll wrap up now, but not before a few thank-yous to a few people.

First to our trainer and psycho analysist Teresa Edwards – without her input into our diets, training programmes and mental well being, we would not have been in any conditions to compete on a national, let alone international stage.

Secondly, Ali G – thank you for the invite and the confidence that we won’t let you down.

Thirdly, to all the other people, family, friends and strangers, who have supported us with deeds and thoughts through the last year.

Last, but certainly not least, a big thank you to our 11 year old daughter Renee, who has had to put up with the mood swings and food cravings of not just one parent competing, but two!

So to all the other New Zealand competitors, good luck, let’s get over there and give these Aussies a taste of good, natural, made in New Zealand, Kiwi muscle!

Teneka Hyndman

Hi my name is Teneka Hyndman, I'm a 31 year old Personal Trainer from Les Mills Gym - Auckland, New Zealand. Excluding this year 2010 - I have competed in 27 Body Building Competitions and placed top 3 in all but 4 shows!!!

This will be my first Trans-Tasmin competition and I am very excited to be apart of the New Zealand Team. February 2009 I was very unfortunate to get a broken arm - a drunken 20 year old twisted my arm to have an arm wrestle... whilst at the top of the challenge & staying strong... he felt embarrassed... jerked my arm then put his bodyweight behind it... and CRACK snapped my humerus in two!

I was in plaster for 9 weeks and spent another 10wks regaining movement and strength in my arm. So I actually feel priviledged to be competing again so soon and fully recovered - if not now 110% more determined to suceed than ever before.

Christine Chinn

Beauty Therapist. This would be my third year in Body Building - competed in 2007 came third in 2008 ANB Figure Sydney. Body Building has changed my life through learning about quality and quantity of food, I feel amazing and energized.

I suffered severe eczema and asthma all my life and through a healthy diet, my skin has never looked better, with regular consistent exercise, I cannot remember the last time I had difficulty breathing. It truly has given me a new lease in life. WE NEED TO BELIEVE IN OURSELVES.

Karen Kissell

After hitting the NZ Bodybuilding Scene impressively last year, being unbeaten in my division at all 4 shows I entered I gained the following titles:

2009 NZFBB South Island Novice Short Figure Champion
2009 NZFBB New Zealand Novice Short Figure Champion
2009 NABBA Top of The South Overall Figure Champion
2009 NABBA New Zealand Senior 35+ Figure Champion

I competed as a novice, doing NABBA shows in 2006 and 2007, but then had a year off to have a small operation on my shoulder. It is since changing my training techniques and studying and gaining a Certificate in Sports Nutrition, I have managed to make the improvements needed to live my dream of being part of a NZ team competing overseas.

I live in sunny Nelson, where I work as a Membership Consultant at Cityfitness. I also run my own business, Performance+Nutrition as a Nutrition Consultant. The gym is my life and I love my training, especially with my awesome new training partner. I enjoy the routine of my day and the challenge that this lifestyle brings.

Once, an unfit, unhealthy, unmotivated person, I have changed my whole life around and enjoy the new found confidence in myself that it has given me, along with feeling healthy and fit! Also meeting so many like minded people along my journey has brought many new friends into my life.

I am sponsored this year by First Impressions Beauty Salon in Richmond, and Cityfitness which I would like to say a big thumbs up too for helping in what is such an expensive sport!

With only 9 weeks to go until the ANB Asia Pacific Championships our team of 34 athletes are all working their butts off to look their absolute best for this exciting event. We welcome on board our main sponsor, Balance Sports Nutrition, who have contributed greatly to the cost of the team's uniforms, we are very proud to be associated with Balance. Also we welcome, as sponsors, GoFigure www.gofigure.co.nz and ALI GZ bikini design. It is a pleasure for me to be organising this team to come over to compete on the Gold Coast in May and I wish them all the best for the next 9 weeks of preparation. I'd like to introduce another 2 members of the team:

Julie Harris

Started training 7 years ago after birth of youngest son, trying to get fit and tone up. Competed when Jack was 10mths old and won. Since then have competed every year since winning Regional and placing in top 3 at Nationals.

Always competed for NZFBB, last year went to Asian Pacific comp and had such a good time have decided to do it again. Excellent show and company. I train at Kaiwaka gym, small community gym ,mostly on my own.Work part time there as trainer, and part-time as a nurse. Love the sports but not the politics.Family hate me competing but this does not stop me,does get a bit lonely coming in to comp, but have met some really great people who inspire me to continue to improve.

Jacque Pedersen

I am a mother of three daughters and own my own stamping and scrapbooking business. I've been competing for almost three years and am a proud supporter of the natural federations.

I would encourage all women (and men!) to unleash their inner and outer strength by pushing their perceived boundaries in all they do. You can do it!

Hiya, my name is Sheryl and this is my 5th year competing as a Figure competitor. As an ex-early teen gymnast and a later gym enthusiast, I fell into the sport of body building by accident really.

Weight training had always been in my blood for many years prior and even though the birth of my two adorable children took me away from it for a few years, I found it extremely easy to slip right back into the swing of things then when the time was right to engage with the exercise regime again.

The curiosity of what it would be like to do a "one-time" body building competition got the better of me and with the added bonus of a first place prize in my division each and every consecutive year, it's simply just continued. I now know that if you do well in this sport...once is never enough!

This will be my first time competing overseas and as a natural drug free competitor, I am extremely excited to be representing not only New Zealand but my wonderful sponsors BALANCE, in what seems to be one of the most talked about natural shows around.

So a big thanks to my family and loved ones for believing in me and to BALANCE for their support and product assistance. Without these people, my complete body building journey would not have been possible.

Another thanks to ANB for the invite! The New Zealand team for this year's competition is shaping up to be an awesome one, so look out Aussie's the Kiwi's are coming to town and we intend on leaving our mark! J

See you all soon

Hi, I'm Delwyn Evans, I'm 46 years old and thats only oneside of me (as Susan Boyle said).

I live in a small town called Pirongia which is south west of Te Awamutu I joined the gym October 2006 as a very unhealthy over weight 98 kg and loads of heath problems I first competed at Coromandel Classic as under 55kg novice and then later on in 2009 at nzfbb nationals .

I am a mother of two boys 21 and 15 I work at zero limits gym as membership consultant (no excuse for not training) I love what I have done and wouldnt change it.

I look forward to competing and gaining experience

UPDATE MARCH 2010

We are 12 weeks out from the ANB Asia Pacific Champs and our New Zealand team numbers for this event has just reached a whopping 34.

The opportunity for New Zealand athletes to come compete against some of the best bodies in Australia, in a drug tested federation, has been a huge motivating factor for many of them.

I know that whether they are training together with others in their gyms for this event, or training on their own, they are all committed to doing their very best in May.

I'd like to introduce you to a couple of members of the NZ team and over the next couple of months I'll add a few more athletes with their profiles...

Niki Taylor

I am Niki, wife, mother, pharmacist and Bodybuilder! This year is the 20th anniversary of my first bodybuilding competition. I have always played sport, from tennis to netball, rowing to marathon running and many others, in my last year of school I was introduced to the gym through rowing. I took up aerobics instructing and then was encouraged by the gym owner to compete in bodybuilding, and so I did.

Although having a break while I had my two children I was never far from the gym. I love the discipline of bodybuilding and every year brings a new challenge. I have competed for a number of different federations and won a number of titles in Physique, Figure, Bodyfitness and Mixed Pairs. This year I am happy to be going back to the Gold Coast to compete at the ANB Asia Pacific Comp.

Last year I competed in the sport model class, which was a very different experience but I will be back in figure class in 2010, where I feel I am better suited. It is geat to be able to compete in a well run, drug tested competition, which focuses on the athletes. A big thumbs up to ANB. So here's to the next 20 years, I don't think I will still be on stage then, but I am sure I will never be to far away from the GYM!

Co-Owner / Personal Trainer at INFINITY Training Systems, Invercargill

I have always been passionate about being active and played alot of different sports whilst growing up. A turning point for me was at high school when I realised I could take Physical Education and there were even whole science topics dedicated to the human body and exercise! Getting in the gym I was your typical guy bulking up for the first xv. I only played rugby for a short time upon leaving but I perserved at the gym as I could see changes in my body and I realised I didnt have to rely on others, such as in a team situation for me to win my own competiton within myself. I continued on with tertiary studies in Sport and Recreation and Sports Medicine.

Eventually I was employed to teach Health Sciences at a local Polytechnic - Human Anatomy, Physiology and Nutrition. One day one of my students won a bodybuilding competition and although I had always entertained the idea, this lit somewhat of a fire under me. I am a big believer in working hard and being honest to yourself - that is what appeals to me in drug free competition and the ANB. As far as Im concerned you are your own best (or worst) enemy in pushing yourself and improving from one competition to the next. It goes without saying then that I try to set my goals of every competition a little higher than the last. And yes I am one of those people that will go there and do that extra set or rep their competition may not.

I try to take the same approach in encouraging my personal training clients at Infinity Training, no matter what their goals. I will continue on in this sport until I feel there is nothing more I could have achieved and that (along with the great people you meet) is what drives me. I have been extremely fortunate in the last while to work with one of NZ's best natural bodybuilders (I wont drop his name as that is not in his nature) but let's just say Australia and NZ watch this space!

UPDATE JANUARY 2010

It has been a while since I updated the NZ page here, but that's not to say nothing has been happening with ANB NZ - far from it!

2010 is an exciting year for ANB NZ. In May I am bringing over a team of kiwis to compete at the ANB Asia Pacific Champs on the Gold Coast.

As of today, we have 24 competitors confirmed as coming over to be part of the team, and another 32 very keen to be part of it and yet to confirm.

Also we have a good team of supporters/trainers and families coming over to support their athletes in what is, for many of them, their first international competition.

This is a big step up in numbers from what we had last year and I'm really excited to be involved with this very dedicated and enthusiastic team of athletes who are all looking forward to the challenge that lies ahead of them in 18 weeks time! Most of the team that came over in 2009 are returning to compete again - which says a lot for the first experience they had - in fact some of them had already booked their flights months ago!

I'm very excited about the quality of this team also - there are a number of NZ bodybuilding champions who have made the decision to come over and compete in the ANB and welcome the drug-testing, as this is something that has been lacking in New Zealand for the past couple of years.

Last year our team was 'all female' but this year we have got the guys coming over to give the aussie guys a run for their money. We've got athletes from all round NZ, from the top of the north island to almost the bottom of the south island, (sounds like an advert!) and will be competing in almost every class that is available.

If you are reading this update and you are keen to been part of this kiwi team don't hesitate in contacting me for more info

Take care,
Ali G.

Firstly I would like to thank the ANB for such a warm welcome to the team from New Zealand that came over to compete at the ANB Asia Pacific International on the 30th May 2009!

We were immediately welcomed into the competition from the first point of contact with the ANB personnel and also the event organiser Steve Jones.

On our arrival at the competition registration we felt like we were indeed a part of this fabulous event and we were introduced to many of the ANB team - it was a very friendly atmosphere and we were amped for the competition the next day!

Right from our arrival at the competition venue we treated with utmost respect from the ANB team and when the President, Robert Powell, addressed the athletes at the briefing you could feel that both he and the organisation - ANB - really believed in team spirit. He spoke to the athletes rather than at them and encouraged everyone to support each other and make each person feel proud of their achievement by just being there. He touched on some protocol of the show but the main focus of the briefing was of comraderie.

We enjoyed the whole day and the evening show and it was a pleasure to be at this event which ran on time and the amount of organisation that went into it was obvious on the day.

A special thankyou to Steve and Antonietta Jones for the updates to all of us thru emails - both leading up to the show and also after it. Many of the team have commented to me that this was fabulous and it felt great to be 'kept in the loop'.

I would also like to thank the sponsors that came on board to support this natural bodybuilding competition we do appreciate your generosity, and we all know that without the sponsors and also the personal input from Steve and Antonietta, plus all those people who work behind the scenes, there would simply be no show.

Team kiwi spent the next few days enjoying the warmth and hospitality of the Gold Coast and some of us even managed to fit in a 'fun' photo shoot with Sunshine Coast photographer, Greg Gardner on the beach at 7am in the morning!!

I'm convinced the locals thought we were mad - thankfully there were not too many people around to see us 6 girls wearing very little and racing around in the surf!

As the newly named New Zealand representative for the ANB I am looking forward to an exciting future of being part of the ANB team and continuing to introduce natural kiwi athletes to this wonderful federation and kicking some aussie butt!

Any kiwis out there who would like to find out more information about competing in this drug tested federation, please contact myself or the ANB via the contact page on this site.
